Moving into a home of your own is the American dream, but for people with developmental disabilities, it's also an important step in building self-esteem as independent adults.
Since opening its first home in 1984, Heritage Christian Services has grown to more than 53 homes and apartments throughout Western New York. Click here for a listing of our homes.
The physical and medical needs of the individuals HCS serves range from moderate to comprehensive levels of assistance. HCS residential facilities vary and range from homes of all women, or all men living together, mixed facilities, one-level homes with wide hallways and universal adaptations for persons who use wheelchairs, and individual apartments where kitchen facilities and living rooms are shared. Reflecting the general population, HCS is now building homes specifically for seniors with developmental disabilities.
Each residence has 24-hour staffing with a committed team of resident counselors, direct support professionals, home managers, health support professionals and clinicians. An emphasis on high staff to consumer ratios ensures quality care and appropriate individual attention for both medical and physical needs.
Due to legislation known as NYS CARES, human services agencies in New York State, like Heritage Christian Services, have been able to open more homes and reduce the waiting list for residential services. It has been the answer to many prayers since, in the past, the wait list has been compared to a 30-year wait from the time of enlistment.
