Government programs like Medicaid help families provide for the basic needs of a relative with developmental disabilities, but they don't cover "extras" like adaptive equipment, special bedroom furnishings, vacations or summer camp. However, families can provide money for these kinds of life-enhancing extras through a Special Needs Trust. Family members can also leave gifts to their loved ones in their wills through these trusts. A Special Needs Trust allows families to provide their loved ones with a better quality of life without jeopardizing the individual's eligibility for government aid.

| Rather than incur the expense of an attorney and trustee (typically a bank) to establish their own trust, families can join Heritage Christian Services' Pooled Special Needs Trust. The funds provided by participating families are pooled for investment by the HCS Foundation to reduce risks and costs. Each individual benefiting from the trust receives a pro rata share based on their family's contributions, with payouts subject to the approval of the HCS Guardianship/Trust Committee. The Pooled Trust requires a $5,000 minimum for the initial contribution, and contributions of $1,000 or more can be made at any time afterwards, including through estate plans. |
